Bariatric Surgery Psychological Evaluations
Preparing Mind and Body for Life-Changing Surgery
Bariatric surgery is a major medical procedure that changes your digestive system to support weight loss. It’s typically recommended when diet and exercise haven’t been effective, or when weight-related health issues pose serious risks. While the surgery reshapes the body physically, it also prompts significant emotional, psychological, and lifestyle changes.
At Pillars of Wellness, we provide comprehensive psychological evaluations to support your readiness for surgery and contribute to the best possible outcomes in your long-term wellness journey.
For Bariatric Surgeons, PCPs, and Hospital Systems
We work closely with bariatric programs and surgical teams to provide required pre-surgical psychological evaluations. Our reports include psychosocial readiness, behavioral risk factors, and tailored recommendations to support long-term success. We ensure timely documentation to help streamline insurance and medical clearance processes.
Why Is a Psychological Evaluation Required Before Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery doesn’t just change how your body functions—it also impacts how you think, feel, eat, and relate to others. A psychological evaluation is an important part of your pre-surgical process and is often required by your surgical team or insurance provider.
The purpose of the evaluation is to:
- Identify any psychosocial risk factors that may affect surgical outcomes
- Assess your coping strategies, support systems, and mental readiness
- Make tailored recommendations to help you prepare for the emotional aspects of surgery
- Support both you and your surgical team in creating a clear and realistic plan for post-surgical success
Patients often face significant changes in their eating behaviors, body image, emotions, relationships, and daily habits after surgery. Understanding and preparing for these shifts is crucial.
What to Expect During the Evaluation
Your bariatric evaluation is designed to be comprehensive yet efficient. It typically includes three parts, all completed within a convenient timeframe to help expedite the process for your surgical team:
1. Psychological Testing (Approximately 60 Minutes)
You will complete a set of standardized psychological questionnaires that assess factors such as emotional functioning, behavior patterns, and coping style. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers—just honest ones.
2. Clinical Interview (45–60 Minutes)
A licensed mental health provider will conduct a structured clinical interview to review your history, challenges, goals, and readiness for lifestyle changes.
3. Final Feedback Session
After your testing and interview are complete, you will have a follow-up session (in-person or via HIPAA-compliant telehealth) to review the results and discuss next steps. A detailed written report is then sent to your referring physician within two weeks.
What We Assess
Your evaluation will consider:
- Emotional readiness and coping skills
- History of mental health or substance use concerns
- Understanding of the surgical process and post-surgical expectations
- Eating behaviors and past weight loss efforts
- Support systems and motivation for change
- Risk of post-surgical adjustment difficulties
This is not a pass/fail process—it’s about ensuring you are set up for success.
